Seoul – South Korea New Year Celebrations & Fireworks 2018

Although Koreans celebrate their New Year – Seollal according to the Lunar Calendar, they also celebrate New Year on 1st January with great enthusiasm.

Seoul is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Korea (South Korea).

In Seoul, the main new year celebrations take place in Bosingak – a large Bell pavilion on Jongno, where there is a tradition of ringing the 15th Century Bosingak Bell 33 times at the midnight on New Year’s Eve. Massive number of people come here to see this ceremony.

Apart from this fireworks display also takes place in many parts of the city. If you are at the Namsan Tower (N Seoul Tower), you can enjoy several firework shows all over the city at the same time such as at Han Bridges, Seoul Plaza and also at the Yongsan Base etc.

In South Korea there is a tradition where in every year on the first morning of the new year, thousands of Koreans get up before dawn and venture to the coast or mountain tops to watch the sun rise. They believe that watching the first sun rise of the new year will bring you good luck and karma for the rest of the year.
