Just like people in other parts of the world, people of Finland also celebrate Gregorian New Year on 1st January.
In Finish, people wish Happy New Year to all saying “Hyvää uuttavuotta”.
The main event of the Finnish New Year celebration is held in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, where people gather in the Senate Square, one of the central squares of the city, to attend the national New Year’s Eve ceremony. This is followed by fireworks and New Year’s celebrations outside the Helsinki Cathedral, depending on how cold the weather in Finland is at the time.
The short and solemn ceremony usually consists of speeches made by the city mayor, the bishop or the like, cheesy musical performances by various untalented “artists”, saying of three cheers for the fatherland and playing and singing of the national anthem.
The Finnish Broadcasting Company broadcasts the reception of the New Year at Helsinki Senate Square. Countdown to New Year is with the Helsinki Cathedral clock. In the afternoon programme, the German comedy sketch Dinner for One is shown every year. On the radio, just before midnight, the poem Hymyilevä Apollo or Smiling Apollo by Eino Leino is read.
